I will build a stronger, more effective union – not waste time playing Westminster politics
My first priority every day as General Secretary will be to protect and improve your terms and conditions. Our current leader spends too much of his time – and your money – playing at Westminster politics. I will never try to be the puppet master of the Labour Party. The most important job is standing up for you the members, wherever you live and work in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland or Gibraltar.
The economy is changing, but the leadership of our union has not kept up. There are now over 1.5 million agency workers in the UK, and almost a million people on zero hours contracts. The result is low quality, insecure jobs without basic protection, undermining everyone’s terms and conditions. For many workers it doesn’t seem to matter how hard they work, they don’t see it reflected in their pay.
We need to do much more to fight back. We need a new General Secretary who will change our union so it is stronger, smarter and more effective.
When we are strong we bargain, when we are weak we beg. I will build our membership so we have a stronger bargaining position. This means reaching out, recruiting and organising people who do not yet belong to our movement. We need to recruit more women, younger members, black and ethnic minority people, agency workers and those on zero hours contracts. I will create a new Family Membership Rate, so we can bring more people under the protection of our union.
I will also support and empower our reps, organisers and officers, so we get better at growing the union and winning negotiations. I will create a new Rep Support Team to provide our reps with better guidance, advice and help when they need it. I will also create a new network of experienced former reps and officers who can support individual cases with their hard-won knowledge. We will become better at defending our members in the workplace.
I will focus on protecting your job and defending your terms and conditions.
